Rettchit Interview

Reading Time: 6 minutes

Rettchit or otherwise known by his first name Jackal is a dubstep producer from Denver signed to Firepower Records. His main inspiration for getting into producing electronic music was when he had first come across Deadmau5’s stuff online. Jackal’s earlier productions were house music and dubstep had originally started out as a side project but then became his career.

Recently, “Sedona” was released; a collaborative track with Zetta that was premiered on the DubstepGutter YouTube channel and on Firepower Records “Shellshock Annihilation” EP.

Let’s get to know Rettchit a little more…

At the end of April, Firepower Records released and debuted his “Lock & Load” promo mix. Having styles that range from those cinematic, intense and dramatic sounds. Datsik and Excision are two of his biggest influences. Setting a goal of touring and playing festivals like Shambhala, EDC, UMF and performing anywhere else!

The Interview

Nightenjin: What’s the story behind Rettchit?
Rettchit: For thousands of years humanity has been observed and influenced to bring the world to its state today. Through the careful guidance of technology and culture, the world and its inhabitants are being prepared for the biggest step in their evolution. The Age of The Robot is upon on us and Rettchit is the first phase in humanities final stage of this evolution, as prophesied so long ago. Versed in music, Rettchit transcends the limitations as we know them and delivers a new heavy sound to the industry. His ability to create a futuristic onslaught of sonic destruction, and the penetration of his being and music into the psyche of the audience is the power harnessed from his robotic structure and spiritual abilities. To meld his mind and spirit to his robotic body structure, G.H.O.S.T., the groundbreaking fusion of AI and Biocomputing was utilised. What is G.H.O.S.T. and where it came from are mysteries to even Rettchit. Foretold in the stars, Rettchit was chosen by the creators of G.H.O.S.T. to bridge the human race from its current state to the heritage of those who have been watching from beyond the endless abyss of space.

NE: What inspired you to start the Rettchit project?
R: I was inspired by Deadmau5 mainly in the beginning. I was watching a show called “Grimm” on TV and they had this fake DJ called “Wretched Cat.” I copied that guy at first and totally forgot what the name was 3 months later and was like “What was my DJ name again? Rettchit? That sounds right.” Then I found Deadmau5 online and fell in love with EDM.

I started producing from a little online DAW called Soundation and kept upgrading every few months. At first, I was a big room house music producer and actually was signed to a label. If you look hard enough, you can find all of my old house tunes. Dubstep was originally a side project for me but then became my career. Ever since then, Datsik and Excision have been my two biggest influences and this “side project” started only two years ago.

NE: What was the idea behind your mask/helmet?
R: My helmet is a part of me. Growing up I have always pushed around and bullied, literally was that kid who would come home everyday bruised and beat up from the others. I didn’t have ANY friends til maybe 9th grade I had ONE. Anyways… I found this paintball mask on Craigslist 3 years ago and thought that it would be so cool to wear it for my shows. I wear a mask to escape the reality that I knew, to jump into the one place I feel at home and comfortable. When I wear my helmet, I am no longer myself, I am Rettchit.

My confidence within myself boosts immensely, my entire personality changes and I wear it for people to escape reality as I did. To help everyone going through a hard time or just to have a getaway. To explain a little more, I want people to come to my shows and see something that is from another world. I want people to come closer together one day in the music industry to escape reality with me and join me in my robotic world. When people see Rettchit, all I see are smiles and love and that’s what it’s all about, love.

NE: For those out there who aren’t familiar with your music, please describe your style.
R: If you haven’t heard my music, I like to describe my style as a very cinematic and Transformery. I tell stories with each track that I make which is usually a darker atmosphere. I add bone chilling ambiences and FX to set the exact tone I’m looking for, then I add my special flair of War Drums that just completes the track. My style is very intense and dramatic as well, my breakdowns are where you can hear my robots in the distance, or that something’s coming.

My breakdowns go into very heavy rises that make everything tense and “scary” I guess to perfectly lead up to my drops. Every drop I do is something I feel deep down, every track name has a purpose that explains how I felt at the time. I am already starting to be known as “The Transformer” for both my music and my looks. Long story short and in my own opinion, I am the robot who makes Dubstep the way it should be made that no one has truly heard before.

NE: If you could work with any artist, who would it be and why?
R: If I could work with any artist(s), I would work with Datsik and Excision. Why? Because both of them have helped me through my life with their music. Growing up and after discovering Dubstep, that was my only way to happiness. To work with them and show them how much they have influenced me would be astounding. I couldn’t imagine how I would actually feel if that happened. But I am hopeful!!

NE: What are your goals for your music career for the next few years?
R: My goals in my career are to tour with Excision or Datsik, playing EDC, UMF, Shambhala, and of course every other place I can possibly perform at. Not only that, but to hit 10,000 followers on every social media account I have, it’s going to be tough, but I am determined. Other than that…. my only other goal is to perfect my craft and have people discover the world that I bring.

NE: What do you enjoy doing when you’re not making or playing music?
R: To be honest, I usually always do something with music. Whether it be listening to it, making it, or mixing it. I guess if not music, I usually play video games or play my guitar. As I said earlier in the interview, I never really have had friends so I’m most certainly the loner/nerd type of guy.

NE: What has been your most memorable moment to date?
R: My most memorable moment to date has got to be my signing with Firepower Records. That’s because Datsik helped me get through some stuff with his music and to be signed to HIS label…. Something I never thought I would have the chance to do and I feel lucky and humbled to be where I am at today.

NE: If you weren’t a DJ, what would you be doing instead?
R: If I wasn’t a DJ I would be a loser I’m pretty sure haha. I never was very good in school since I was focused on protecting myself from all the other kids around me. I would have to say… I think I would have gone to college for law or video game design if it hadn’t been for my music.

Nightenjin: What are some things we’ll be seeing from Rettchit in the future?
Rettchit: The helmet is just the beginning my friend, you will one day see only a robotic figure entirely. Even with a voice changer. I will no longer be a human, but something entirely new. The first question you asked I answered with Rettchit’s story. Rettchit is a mix between an extraterrestrial race and of course humans. So you will see Rettchit evolve throughout the years. Not only that but of course you will start seeing Rettchit’s name on big league fliers and more labels than just Firepower Records. We have only just begun…
