We’re as thrilled as ever to hear the latest from these supremely talented individuals that have excelled in their own craft. This year’s list covers a mix of genres including dubstep, trap, hyperpop, downtempo, house, techno, and more. There’s no question that the discussion about diversity in dance music has been a repeated one. I touched on it back on this site in October and I even shared my experience about being an Asian woman in dance music on Mind The Cult in March for Women’s History Month. It’s a topic widely discussed in our community and it’s a topic that we should keep talking about until we see some change.

Kaytranada being the first Black artist to win a GRAMMY in dance music was a big step (and a huge win) for diversity in dance music. But it’s something that should’ve been achieved a long time ago. After all, dance music was created by Black people.

So when I see folks in the community saying that “we just need to focus on the music,” I both agree and disagree. I disagree because EDM is so much more than headbanging to heaters and slappers — it’s a whole culture. And I agree because even if we do “just focus on the music,” then we have to focus on the fact that dance music is rooted in the Black community and came out of a need to create a space where they finally belonged. So…. why is EDM white as fuck now?

Even as a person of color, I’m a guest of the culture as much as the next person. So I decided to talk to other influential people of color in the music industry (who I think do a great job in creating a more inclusive space) to ask them:

What does diversity in dance music mean to you? And what can other people in your role do to champion diversity in dance music?

Adrian Reed (capshun)

Really, diversity to me can be applied to all things. From literally a person’s cultural or racial background, music taste, location, and upbringing. I think what’s most important about diversity is to be open to all possibilities. You never truly know what a person can bring to the table until you learn about them as people. I have met so many great artists as a label curator and I have gotten to share my light in the industry — even if just in small ways, at the moment. The biggest thing I get from music is being open to everything: Music, race, religion, sexuality, gender. And being at peace that those differences in us create the melting pot that makes the culture. Not just what we see in the forefront a lot of the time.

Other label owners just need to be open and stop being afraid of actually supporting people because of their differences. It’s also about actively being open to working with different types of people and artists. Black, white, big, or small — We have to break down the not-so-diverse glass ceiling and lack of representation starting at our levels and build up this culture of diversity. I think it’s becoming better in some ways. I still unfortunately see a lot of… not so diverse platforms and communities. But people are opening their eyes up to culture more. We just have to keep up being active about our participation in creating a more diverse culture and community.

To me diversity in music can mean a bunch of things, but what I would like to think is that you add both your creativity on top of, let’s say your heritage in that general genre. Adding in some instruments from your culture or that tune your grandma used to sing for you when you were a kid, just that experience from your roots can go a long way in dance music, and because everyone has different experiences, put that into music and you end up with a slightly different sound from what you’re used to.

Other artists can start talking about it and sharing. Sparking up a conversation about the matter is what moves it forward. When more people listen to those conversations, the more they go back and listen to different takes on dance music, and the more experience everyone gains from it. My motto is “also support the homies” and I feel that other artists can adopt that idea too.

Diversity in dance music for me means opening the door for Black artists and creatives to get their tracks signed by major labels in the space, get booked for major fests and shows, and get paid equal rates to their counterparts. I pinpoint Black artists because although POC are widely underrepresented, Black artists also have little visibility in the scene, and being a Black woman who manages two artists, that is a goal of mine. In addition, I would love to see more support and opportunities being afforded to Black creators and managers/industry people in the space.

Other artist managers can look out for upcoming POC and Black talent, plug Black artist managers and their artists for opportunities, show them the way a bit. Above all, try to create more spaces and getting more Black and POC managers in the room where important conversations are being made is really key. And above all, listening and learning. Hearing people’s experiences in this industry being POC or Black, and really learning from those experiences, validating those people and honoring their truths. I think that will make a huge difference.

Diversity means accepting EVERYONE. No matter their sex, race, skin color, size, weight, body shape, genre, sexual orientation, etc. Accept everyone for what they are. It also means inclusion… include everyone in your projects, you never what a different perspective will lead you to. 

Other publications can highlight different groups in the community and not just based on their outer appearance. Looking deeper and find out their story and share it, along with their music.

Diversity in dance music means to realize and work against the many systems in place that actively put marginalized artists and industry professionals at a disadvantage. While many dance music publications and media outlets work to amplify marginalized voices in the industry, real change comes from giving BIPOC opportunities to lead from positions of power.

Writers in the dance music space can help champion diversity by highlighting real issues that effect BIPOC in the industry. This includes lack of opportunity and inclusion, and the lack of infrastructure that lets people from marginalized groups into the dance music scene in the first place. While I believe BIPOC artists should be highlighted more, many publications only do this in observance for a specific month. BIPOC artists deserve to be championed year round like their counterparts.

Diversity to me in dance music is making everyone feel included, having a space for everyone at the table. The dance music world can so easily get drowned out with what’s “poppin” and “trending” and that’s so often the white man, even though my inbox is full of talented BIPOC whose music won’t ever get picked up. We can hire and diversify our teams all we want but if everyone, artists included aren’t given the same opportunities then something still isn’t right.

Other publicists can start paying better attention. Do your job wholeheartedly. Dig deeper. The diversity in music is right in front of our faces, we are at the forefront of the problem. Let’s fix it.

As I worked through this article and interviewed the amazing people above, I had an epiphany that led me to question… Why are people of color generally the only people who talk about diversity? In a subculture as “accepting,” “loving,” and “PLUR” as EDM, why weren’t the people at the top (read: white people) contributing to finding a solution to this glaring issue in the scene?

I took to Twitter to ask more white folks if they’d like to speak up, but didn’t get much bite. So until everyone can join the conversation and work together into creating a more diverse and inclusive space, we still have a long way to go.

Originating in 2012 as a means to outfit festival-goers with top-of-the-line streetwear attire, Danny Ashorineko brought Bassdrop Clothing into the world. Merging twin-flame passions of electronic dance music and design, he honed his craft over several years, successfully releasing flashy, forward-thinking garments with intention. A vast majority of the early work came in the form of this merchandise line, coupled with a blog that handled music reviews and interviews. 

After gaining a firm grasp on the complex inner mechanisms of the industry as a whole, along with help from his good friend Nathan Ismail, Ashorineko acquired a laser-focused direction for Bassdrop Clothing, which gave way in 2017 to the brand that we all know and love today as Nightenjin. 

What’s a “Nightenjin,” you might ask? Well, the name derives from two parts; “night” comes from the nightlife culture that permeates and thrives in dance music, and “enjin” is a cheeky allusion to the many moving parts that make an engine successfully work, much like the collaborative aspect aiding in our scene’s exponential growth. 

Sporting a powerful new set of ideals based in design, along with an intent for promoting positive change in the community-at-large, Nightenjin naturally progressed into a platform for music releases, with a major emphasis on underground talent with big-time sound. The brand soon delved even further into the all-encompassing ecosystem of the music industry by incorporating live events locally in Windsor, Ontario, and Detroit, Michigan.

So, we’ve covered the past and present of all things Nightenjin, and now we’re onto the future. The imprint’s mission is to continue to be a launching point for the best and brightest up-and-comers within the scene, aiding in both promoting their music and imparting priceless industry knowledge to help them attain the success they truly deserve.

With a massively diverse team of all races, genders, and ethnicities seated firmly at the helm, inclusion and representation will continue to be a focal point at Nightenjin. This comes with the addition of brand ambassadors to boost the overall message and plans for more collaborations in all facets. 

Nightenjin aims to grow hand-in-hand with its aspiring roster and dedicated crew, to bolster the brand’s ability to nourish upcoming talent, and ultimately expand into bigger and brighter seas. It’s a time of reckoning in the electronic music community. Just this year, we’ve seen exposés on huge artists like Bassnectar, Billy Kenny, and most recently, Ekali. Some of the most popular Twitter personalities have been outed for—to put it lightly—poor behavior. Black Lives Matter has taken the forefront of this era’s civil rights movement, and we’re learning some of our closest friends just don’t care. All of this is happening, and because we’re in the time of the pandemic, festival-goers aren’t able to indulge in escapism. We all have to confront the harsh realities that it’s not all PLUR in this community, and it’s our responsibility to stop allowing the actions of others to be harmful.

While I can name this artist, that manager, or this Twitter person for what they’ve done, if there’s one thing we’ve learned, it’s that nobody is safe from being exposed. Some people might really hate that. They’ll blame “cancel culture” for letting someone’s mistakes ruin their lives. But there comes a time where we have to differentiate between a mistake and a personal choice. And I’m going to be bold here and say the abuse of power isn’t a mistake. When someone knowingly uses a power dynamic—be it race, status, gender, etc.—to their advantage, they’re doing it because they can. And they think they can get away with it because of who they are.

We can’t let them anymore.

It’s not unusual that we become fans of people. Whether they’re a musician, someone we look up to, or even the friends we’ve made online (because Twitter has become such an integral part of our community), we start to admire them. We put people on a pedestal because we love their art or what they say they stand for. We love the memories they’ve given us. And with social media, we feel like we really know them. But we don’t. So we don’t need to defend them when it turns out they did bad things.

That’s why tweets saying, “This person is over! Time to redirect my energy onto someone else,” aren’t productive at all. Obsessing over people you don’t know and being heartbroken when you find out they’re trash fucking hurts… Why would you want to do it all over again? If there’s one thing you should take away from your fave being exposed, it’s that people aren’t who we think they are. So stop treating them like they’re your best friend. But even if your best friend did the same things, learn to drop them, too.

This is all easier said than done. So here’s a list of things we all can do to make the community a better place, myself included.

#1: Plain and simple: Stop worshipping people because of a high follower count.

Electronic music lovers aren’t the only ones who do this, but it’s not uncommon to see someone be a ride or die for a particular artist, brand, or even someone who just has a lot of followers. Social media bios are filled with hashtags of who they stan, and they’ll attack with a cult-like mentality when someone speaks out against their fave.

Listen. Just because someone is widely loved, it doesn’t absolve them from being outed for doing horrific things. Clout is a disease. Don’t get sick.

#2: Create healthy boundaries based on your values.

What’s important to you? There are a lot of things going on in the world… Where do you stand? Find people whose views align with yours and keep them close, because they’re hard to find. And when you see people exhibiting problematic behavior, don’t be afraid to call them out, or even stop associating with them if needed.

#3: Learn to listen and take accountability.

This time has been a learning experience for everyone, and with more and more people speaking about their life experiences, we need to learn to listen to people who are different from us. Nobody expects us to know it all, but being able to listen and learn from people can help us recognize when we’re wrong and need to unlearn problematic beliefs and behaviors. Being able to admit you’re wrong and commit to meaningful change will make all the difference.

#4: Inspire and encourage a diverse community.

I know earlier I said to find people whose values align with yours, but that doesn’t mean create an echo chamber of your own thoughts. After all, if you aren’t open to people who are different than you, you might never be able to do step #3! Having people of different races, genders, and sexual orientations in your circle will create a more inclusive environment. Whether you’re an artist, a label, or even just a listener, commit to creating a space that is representative of all people. To put it bluntly, this means we need more people of color, more women, and more LGTBQ+ representation and inclusivity. The community could really benefit if they made everyone feel welcome which, as a minority woman, I can strongly say, we still have a long way to go.

Change isn’t out of our reach. We just need to be open to being open. We need to be open to the fact that people can be exposed for bad behavior, and we need to make sure they don’t hold positions of power again. We need to be open to listening and learning from others because we’re not always right. And we need to be open to a more inclusive, diverse community because that’s what our community was always supposed to stand for.

Based on data pulled from other 2020 Artists to Watch lists we determined this year’s first 10 picks: Birthdayy Partyy, Control Freak, Effin, Ekali, Kendoll, Lucille Croft, Masteria, Nostalgix, Reaper and Saint Punk. These are the top names taking over lineups and SoundCloud streams everywhere, blowing us away at every opportunity with their distinct, uncompromisable styles. While it’s perplexing as to why Ekali has flown under the radar for so long, he still has yet to release his debut album, so there’s much anticipation surrounding the project this year.

From there, we selected 10 more of our personal favorites: ALRT, Case of the Mondays, Cloverdale, Galo, Hunter, ISOxo, John Summit, Juelz, Lizzy Jane and X&G. These are the artists who turned our heads in one way or another, regardless of status or social followings, or the number of times they appeared on Artists to Watch lists. Nightenjin was built from the underground, which makes our team especially excited to hear where these projects are heading. Shoutout to Lizzy Jane and Galo, who both dropped tracks on our label this past year.

The immediate future of dance music looks brighter than ever in 2020 and these are the artists leading the pack! Listen up!

Every year we’re blown away by the insane amount of talented artists in dance and electronic music. There’s a newfound excitement heading into 2019 and one particular trend as far as we can see. It’s not about going with the current anymore — it’s about making waves that are your own.

These are the DJ/producers that live and breathe their work, which we’ve experienced firsthand. These are the artists making their own way, shaking up the scene with their own waves. It’s one thing to have an amazing year, but it’s quite another to build the kind of momentum that the following artists have — some in just a very short time.

Above all else, 13 is about quality production. This is a guy who will lock himself in the studio for days or weeks at a time to achieve the perfect mix. It’s easy to hear precision, even through the sheer madness he’s known to deliver. With two huge collaborations with Rezz under his belt, his style is already instantly recognizable among bass music fans everywhere. As for his originals, they’re out of this world.

1788-L

Everything 1788-L touches turns to hype. His debut year in the scene generated a stream of originals and remixes, bringing his dystopian cyberpunk sound to the forefront of dance music. Over this first year, he collaborated with Rezz and provided official remixes for The Glitch Mob and RL Grime. No big deal. Plus, he put out his first EP. 1788-L is more than an artist to watch — he’s a goddamn force of nature.

Anakim

Anakim, in our humble opinion, is a severely underrated artist deserving of some major recognition. Dark, mysterious underground sounds are the usual bump, with driving rhythms and haunting atmospheres to boot. At times, his ethereal arrangements and melodies sound almost too good to be true. Anakim’s music is something you’ll truly have to experience for yourself to believe.

Atlast

Listen to Atlast and you’re in for the rail ride of your life. This producer certainly doesn’t shy away from the heavy. In fact, you’ll have a hard time finding a moment to catch your breath. Remixes of legends like Daft Punk, Knife Party, and Boys Noize and collaborations have blown up on SoundCloud, but it’s his originals that keep us coming back for more. There’s no letting up when it comes to Atlast — you were warned.

Black V Neck

The duo’s bio reads “Just a Shirt that makes music…” but we know there’s more to these guys than that. Infectious rhythms and enticing lyrics are the usual recipe for any Black V Neck production. They make straight up house and tech house for anyone who likes to get down and get a little weird. Listen to their song “Black” to get a rundown of all the other things they like black. Colin Thomas

He’s one of our most closely associated acts for a reason. Colin Thomas demonstrates an extraordinarily refined taste in dance music, turning heads with his genre-bending house creations, which tend to break rules and push boundaries to the max. Having already made his mark in night clubs, from Detroit to Toronto, it’s time for Colin Thomas. Wanna know his secret? It’s all about the bassline!

Danny Kolk

Another house pro serving up the heat is Danny Kolk. One glance at his SoundCloud profile and it’s easy to tell he doesn’t take himself too seriously — but we do. He also represents Brazil proudly, with quirky concoctions made to pack out the dance floor. Citing legends Claude Vonstroke, Billy Kenny, and Maximono as his influences, Kolk is well on his way to making them proud.

G-Rex

G-Rex, another insane producer out of Detroit, finds a well deserved spot on our list. Songs like “Wook Blaster” and “Babatunde” with PEEKABOO have become staples in the bass music scene, absolutely wrecking speakers at every opportunity. His new one with Ghastly, “Heretic,” only further cements his spot in the industry. Get on board and experience the powerful force that is G-Rex.

Gerry Gonza

Blending any and all influences, Gerry Gonza has mass appeal and years of experience under his belt. At the age of 18, he was already playing his first 2,000 cap club. Flash-forward to now, he’s touring the world and is widely supported by the biggest names in the game. It’s all about techno — and i_o knows this better than anyone. His swift rise to the spotlight can be attributed to his masterful productions, which tend to rock at high intensity. To say Lick is an artist to watch is putting it lightly. He’s been leveling up with a stream of heavy-hitting remixes of legendary songs by Skrillex, Virtual Self, and Zeds Dead. Hard work and dedication put him on the map and we can say with confidence that his passion burns brighter than most.

LSDream

When Brillz announced his tripped out side project, we didn’t know what to expect. Months into this journey and we’re astounded by his presence with LSDream. The productions are synth-filled, dream-like sequences, riddled with bass and distortion. Nitepunk

If Nitepunk has a motto, it’s probably, “Go hard or go home.” The rising producer’s recent catalog is not for the lighthearted. Unexpected twists on Mark The Beast x Akylla’s “Covered in Roses” to Busta Rhyme’s masterpiece “Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Can See” demonstrate his diverse spectrum of sound. Noizu

Noizu has the ability to make any party interesting with his unorthodox approach to house music. His breakout track “Lasers” on the HOWSLA compilation turned heads from the start, and the producer has only punctuated his distinct sound since then. Making his way with a style that’s all his own, Noizu continues to impress and we bet 2019 is his year to shine. Can’t wait to hear what’s up his sleeve!

Peekaboo

This Michigan-made bass music hero hails from Detroit, but his sound can be heard from near and far. The Wakaan artist is making waves that are his own, with a slew of hits that have gone viral. Peekaboo’s work is inventive and downright filthy, which has landed him huge collabs with Liquid Stranger, G-Rex (also featured on this list), and Bassnectar himself. Watch out, because Peekaboo is just heating up!

Svdden Death

One of our favorite things to ever happen to bass music, particularly dubstep, is Svdden Death. His music is as relentless as his name suggests, but somehow his material still feels welcoming. Packing in hostile growls, untamed synths, and mind-blowing bass on the regular, Svdden Death will stop you dead in your tracks and force you to listen. We’re not mad about it and you shouldn’t be either.

Swarm

Swarm was already on our radar and that was before he dropped his enthralling and theatrical This Is The End EP this month. He’s one of the main artists paving the way for dark, deadly midtempo with productions that haunt to their very core. His steady releases over the past nine months have been shaking up the scene properly. Brace yourselves for more darkness, because Swarm isn’t letting up anytime soon.

The entire concept of this duo is built upon the Indonesian term Warung, which means “small family-run business.” Their soul purpose is to be “self-made, the lifeline of the family” with an “ever-lasting legacy to carry forth.” Deep techno and underground vibes drive most of their productions, with unexpectancies waiting at every corner. As we wrote in our Miami Music Week 2018 preview blog, Miami becomes the hottest destination in Florida for a week. Inclduing Ultra Music Festival which turned 20 this year… but we didn’t expect a great, spectacular surprise: the Swedish House Mafia reunion on the last day of the annual event.

This year music week took place from March 20th to 25th and, alongside hundreds of thousands of people, we were there for various events to cover plus meet our fans and industry friends.

1. MK Presents Area 10

On Thursday which was our first day in Miami Beach, we covered Marc Kinchen (MK) Presents Area 10 at National Hotel, the Detroit house icon played alongside Camelphat, Will Clarke and more. Plus special guest Diplo which was an unexpected appearance.

2. Chuckie & Friends

The following day we covered the Chuckie & Friends showcase hosted by Revolution 93.5 FM. DJ Chuckie played alongside Nervo, Jay Hardway and more. His special back 2 back guest was none other LAIDBACK LUKE who together played an amazing throwback set for the Miami faithful.

3. More Events

We went to numerous other events, including Nu Crew at Shots Miami, Space Yacht at 1306 Miami, Destructo’s Breakfast Club which was held at 6 am and finally NYC x MIA on our last day in Miami.

4. Random Fun

On Saturday, we ended up on a yacht party with Paul Oakenfold and other label execs thanks to our good friend Jen. We cruised by Ultra Music Festival with an amazing view of the event from the water.

“Every day, we experience sound in our environment, such as the sounds from television and radio, household appliances, and traffic. Normally, these sounds are at safe levels that don’t damage our hearing. But sounds can be harmful when they are too loud, even for a brief time, or when they are both loud and long-lasting. These sounds can damage sensitive structures in the inner ear…” From NIDCD

When you’re someone that attends festivals/events regularly, it’s important to make a conscious effort and take the right steps to minimize the risk of noise-induced hearing loss.

With ongoing exposure, NIHL can also eventually lead to Tinnitus. This occurs due to the fact that ongoing exposure can damage the sensory hair cells inside our inner ears – it usually begins in the ear and continues in the brain.

What is Tinnitus?

“Tinnitus is noises in the head, not related to any psychiatric condition. The noise can be heard anywhere in the head or in one or both ears. So far there are no scientific proven cure for tinnitus.” These are often sounds that consist of clicking, buzzing, whistling or ringing in the ears. Some artists who have opened up about their struggle are: Nova Spire, Jody Barr, London Elektricity and Optical.

Here are some helpful ways to prevent hearing loss:

1. Avoid loud noises

Noise levels are measured in decibels (dB) – the higher the number means that the noise will be louder.

2. Taking extra precautions when listening to music at home

• Using noise cancelling headphones
• Keep volume at a comfortable level
• Take a break for a minimum of 5 minutes during every hour

3. Protect your hearing during loud events and activities

• Give your hearing about 18 hours of recovery time after a lot of exposure to loud noise
• Don’t stand close to loud sources of noise ie. speakers in a venue
• Take a break once and awhile
• Consider wearing/investing in a pair of ear plugs/muffs

4. Have your hearing tested

Make an appointment to get a hearing test if you have experienced any of the following:

• Have family with hearing loss
• Trouble hearing conversations
• Around loud noises on a regular basis
• Ringing in your ears frequently

She has since defended both her controversial revealing outfit and her reprisal attack. Speaking to Daily Mail and other news outlets, she explained that she does not regret her actions and hopes the clip will inspire women to stand up for themselves and feel confident in their own skin.

“I stand by my actions and hope that I’ve inspired women to feel comfortable in their bodies, no matter how they look, and to stick up for themselves when anybody says otherwise or tries to deny you the right to protect your own body.”

Ms. Annello-Kitzmiller also shared a heartfelt online message on her personal Facebook page which was a 6-minute video explaining that she wanted to normalize the naked body.

The sad reality is that this is not an isolated incident and happens more often then people realize. Rave culture itself was built upon love, respect and acceptance. Whether you’re a male or female, everyone is entitled to the freedom of expressing themselves in any way or form. At the end of the day, no matter how someone chooses to dress it is not an open invitation for assault or unwanted touching/attention. We as a community need to work together in combating this problem by protecting and looking out for one another. Also addressing and stamping out harassment that is considered both criminal and predatory. A stranger in life, is a neighbor on the dancefloor.

Music Festivals like Shambhala in B.C or Electric Forest in Michigan are notable examples of companies that are taking the next steps to change because the organizers have gone the extra step to make everyone feel safe and comfortable. At Shambhala, which I attended for 3-years I would always see both woman and men were comfortable enough to walk around topless or completely nude – there were signs throughout the whole grounds reminding people with regards to consent and that “yes means yes” and “no means no” or “consent is sexy”. Not to mention, there was a safe space specifically designed for woman. With Electric Forest, they have ‘Her Forest’ which is a women’s only group camping program that is a collaboration between all those who identify as women and those who celebrate their enjoyment of and equality in the forest family.
